I have been fantasizing about a dream space for sanding foam since before I moved into the condo and set up the workshop. As I’m writing this I have now completed building a Dremel station for cosplay. You may too be wanting a space to sand foam as well though and keep the mess contained. I’m here to share with you how I went about making a space for dremeling so you can maybe build one for yourself.

Materials

Now I didn’t build this station completely from scratch. There was a few components that I meshed together to create exactly what I felt I needed. This included a potting bench for the base, an anti-fatigue mat to keep the floor covered, a plastic drop cloth for draping and curtains, a shop vacuum for getting the dust, acrylic sheets to create windows for filming, caulk and screws to hold it all together and a shop lamp so I could actually see what I’m sanding. Most stuff can be gotten on Amazon, however the drop cloth I just went to the Dollar Store and the acrylic sheets I got from Home Depot.

As for tools I needed a screw driver and I used my Dremel and a drill bit to put holes through the acrylic sheets before attaching them to the bench with screws.

How to Build a Dremel Station for Cosplay

This was actually really easy to make and barely required any tools.

  1. Follow the directions to assemble the potting bench
  2. Mark where the screws will go on the potting station to attach the acrylic sheets. You’ll want two holes mark for the back of the bench and two for each side
  3. Line up the acrylic sheets on the sides they go on to mark where the screws will line up on them
  4. Use your dremel to start small holes everywhere you marked
  5. Screw the acrylic sheets to the potting bench
  6. Where the side pieces meet to the back piece of acrylic sheets, add caulk to help secure them together so there are no gaps
  7. Once the caulk has dried, hang your lamp over the top of the back piece. Make sure the light dome has some sort of cover so dust won’t get all over it
  8. Cut a piece of the plastic drop cloth to act as a curtain in front of the potting bench legs and shelves
  9. Staple the platic drop cloth to the potting bench in the following three locations: the top of the left front leg, the top of the right front leg and one in the middle
  10. Place the anti-fatigue mat in front of the potting bench
  11. Place the shop vacuum beside the station so it’s easy to access while you work
  12. (Optional) You can add command hooks on the side of the potting bench legs to hang up protective glasses, face masks, etc.

This took me less than a day to make and fits every need I have. It makes sanding foam comfortable, easy and prevents it from turning my whole workshop into a dusty mess. It was well worth the time and money building a Dremel station for cosplay.
