So for anyone who knows me, you know I have chosen to just buy all my cosplay props and costumes since I was 17. Well, I finally decided that was the not the best idea fiscally because it makes those cosplays very expensive. So I decided to try my first time crafting a cosplay prop and see if I have what it takes to work with EVA foam! It was a short project since it didn’t take too many hours to do. I wanted it to be a fairly easy project since it would be my first ever. This way I wouldn’t get frustrated and quit.
So to start I headed off to my favorite store next to Target, Home Depot! I purchased stuff for painting, priming, Lots of Kwik Seal, and a Dremel 3000. I ordered a large variety of EVA foam to work with and decided on my project. For my first project I decided it would be for my Chucky genderbend cosplay and would be a standard kitchen knife. If you are not someone who can make a template for this you can order them on Etsy. However for this, since it was so simple I just took a kitchen knife and traced it to make my template. After that I took my 6mm foam and began tracing, cutting, and gluing.
I was pretty happy with myself with cutting it out. Thus I was ready to begin the step that scared me most, sanding with my Dremel. I was very scared to start this portion of the project. After I did though I became ADDICITED to my Dremel. I love it so much and it is hands down my favorite part of crafting props now. I made the blade edge and rounded the handle. Rounding out the handle was hands down my favorite and the end result made me so happy.
After that I used Plasti-Dip to prime it. I have come to hate priming because it really is an outside day project without certain equipment. So outside all day? Yeah, hard pass. Once priming was done the painting process could begin. I had not painted since I was a kid though so I was nervous I would mess up a lot. Overall it wasn’t perfect but for my first ever project I was happy and sealed it all up. I was so happy with my end result and quickly moved on to another small project. Gosh it is so thrilling crafting. This one time attempt has definitely turned into a passion and I am never going back!
