Wigs can help bring a cosplay to life and add to the accuracy of the costume. However, it’s not as simple as taking it out of the packaging and putting it on. Things like washing, styling, proper wear and storage are all a must if you want the wig to look right. This raises a question though of do you need to wear a wig cap under a wig?

The truth is, you don’t have to wear them. However it’s definitely recommended to do so. There’s a few reasons why you should wear a wig cap under a wig while cosplaying that you want to keep in mind while making this decision.

Why Wear a Wig Cap Under a Wig?

There’s a few reasons why you would want to wear a wig cap under your wig.

Appearance & Fit

The first thing to keep in mind is how a wig cap will make your wig appear and fit. The cap can give a more realistic look by hiding your hair and smooth out any bumps. Your hair will also be well kept neatly in the cap so no one sees it. Granted if you have very short hair or are bald, this may not be a concern of yours.

It does however help secure the wig as well so you can move around with realistic hair flips. This can be done with wig glue, tape or bobby pins.

Protection & Comfort

The wig cap can also keep you the cosplayer comfy and protect you and the wig. Because it provides a barrier between the wig and your scalp and hair, it can prevent irritation and itching. This is especially helpful if you have a more sensitive scalp.

It can also protect the wig though by absorbing sweat and oils your head and hair may produce. This helps to keep your wig clean so you won’t need to wash it nearly as often.
