This guide will take you through some more basic terminology that can be essential while you come up with unique new cosplays. So ditch the vocab cards and let’s dive in.
Design Terminology
- Accessory – An item worn in addition to the main costume to complete the look. This includes jewelry, belts, hats, gloves, etc.
- Argyle – Diamond- shaped pattern on the garment.
- Bias – The diagonal direction of fabric.
- Box pleat – A pleat formed by folding fabric inward on both sides to create a flat, rectangular shape on the surface.
- Bust dart – A dart in the fabric to add shaping around the bust area.
- Cartridge pleating – The gathering of fabric into evenly spaced, rounded folds to create fullness without bulk at the seam.
- Conceptualization – When a designer creates the vision and style of a costume based on source material and historical research.
- Elastic shirring – A sewing technique that uses elastic thread to create gathered, stretchy sections in fabric, adding flexibility to garments.
- Filigree – Embellishments made from fine, delicate materials that can be created using embroidery, lace, metal threads.
- Lining – The inside layer of fabric that gives a clean finish and hides seams.
- Monogram – A grouping of 2 or more letters such as initials or words.
- Notch collar – A type of collar commonly found on blazers, suits, and coats. It’s characterized by a small cut-out where the collar meets the lapel.
- Puff sleeve – A type of sleeve that is gathered at the shoulder and sometimes at the hem, creating a rounded, voluminous shape.
- Raw edge – The unfinished edge of fabric.
- Ruche – A technique in sewing where fabric is gathered or pleated in a way that creates a ruffled effect. It’s used to add texture and volume.
- Ruffs and ruffles – Decorative elements made from gathered or pleated fabric.
- Scalloped edges – A series of curved, wave-like shapes along the hem or edge of a garment.
- Silhouette – The overall shape and outline of a clothing item, which defines how it fits and falls on the body.
- Train – An extension of fabric that trails behind the garment.
- Yard or yardage – Unit of measurement for fabric.
