SFX makeup can enhance your horror and other cosplays. It’s an incredibly handy skill set to have. One such material commonly in a makeup artist’s arsenal is rigid collodion. However if you aren’t familiar with it, you’re probably wondering how to use rigid collodion. So let’s cover it’s intended uses and how to create with it.
The main purpose of it is creating scars. It is able to create perfect textures for more realistic scaring in your cosplays. Not only does it give it texture, but it also helps to provide depth which is excellent for aged scars as well as fresh ones.
Rigid Collodion Scar Tutorial
This video focuses on how I did Ash William’s cosplay makeup. However, it works as a rigid collodion scar tutorial since I mostly used that to create the look. Here are the steps I took to create each scar:
- Step 1. Draw a red or dark pink line on your face where you want the scar as a base.
- Step 2. Apply a layer of the rigid collodion with a thin, soft brush. Repeat this step until the scar achieves the desired depth. Be sure to wait till each layer dries before adding another.
- Step 3. Apply fake blood into the the fake scar over the dried rigid collodion to make it look fresh. (Optional)
How do you Use Rigid Collodion Safely
Be sure to keep the following safety tips in mind to avoid damaging your skin:
- Don’t use on sensitive skin or sensitive areas of your face.
- Only remove with spirit gum remover or other recommended removers. Don’t attempt to peel the scar off by hand.
- Apply it in a well ventilated area.
- Don’t wear for multiple days in a row or long periods of time. Always remove the collodion after you’re done with it’s use.
