Back at Fan Expo Chicago 2024, I debuted my Pepa Madrigal cosplay from the movie Encanto. The cosplay was a blast to make with a mix of crafting methods and techniques I got to use. From wig styling to embroidery, I was able to make parts from scratch and others were modified pieces. If you’re wondering how to cosplay Pepa Madrigal, I’ll show you how I made all the different pieces of my costume so you can try it too.

How to Make Pepa Madrigal’s Dress
For the dress, I used a base dress I purchased at Target. Then I dyed the dress and other fabrics to make the collar. Once the dress was the right color and collar assembled, I got to dive into some embroidery at the bottom and in the collar. Sometimes it’s just cheaper to modify a base clothing piece for a cosplay, and if you aren’t competing, it’s an acceptable way to cosplay.
How to Make Pepa Madrigal’s Shoes
I was lucky to find the perfect shoes for my Pepa Madrigal cosplay. After prepping the shoes, I was able to use orange paint and yellow puffy paint to add the details to better match the shoes to Pepa’s in the movie.
How to Style Pepa Madrigal’s Wig
To style the wig, I started with a curly, orange lace front wig. I separated hair for the bangs and the braid. Then I was able to braid the wig and trim the bangs to be the right length.
After the wig was done, I made her headband with yellow fabric and an orange bias tape I made myself. Then I tied it into place on the wig.

How to Make Pepa Madrigal’s Earrings
I tried two different methods for making Pepa’s earrings and even explored an additional third way. Here are three techniques to consider to make your own earrings too:
- 3D printing
- Resin
- Foam clay & EVA foam
