The hot summer heat during a Renaissance festival can be brutal. It can leave you feeling very thirsty and in need of a drink. Making sure you stay hydrated while enjoying the sights and snacks of the fair is important to avoid overheating, dehydration and heat stroke. But how do you carry water at the Renaissance faire? If you want something a little more fun and fitting to a costume than a standard water bottle, these options are a perfect choices.

Renaissance Faire Water Bottle Alternatives

While most fairs allow regular water bottles, it doesn’t quite match with costumes. If you want something that compliments your outfit, try the below options.

Potion Bottles

Small glass potion bottles with cork stoppers make a whimsical and thematic way to carry water. They’re perfect for apothecaries, wizards, or alchemists in costume and can even double as part of your character’s props.

Tankard or Mugs

A classic metal or wooden tankard can hold water and blend seamlessly with nearly any medieval or fantasy attire. Many festival vendors even sell decorative tankards you can refill at drink stations throughout the day. Plus, it’s an easy way to stay in character while staying cool.

Viking Horns

Drinking horns are a bold and eye-catching way to carry your drink. Typically made of horn or shaped resin, they’re perfect for Norse or barbarian-style costumes. Many are designed to be both functional and decorative, and they make for great conversation starters while waiting in line for a turkey leg.

How Do You Carry Water Bottle Alternatives at the Renaissance Faire

The easiest way to carry your Renaissance fair water bottle is on your belt. It keeps it out of hand but still easy to access for a drink. There’s a few holder options to choose from depending on the bottle you choose.

Tankard Belt Holder

These are leather loops or clips that securely hold the handle of your tankard, keeping it at your hip like a proper adventurer’s mug. Some even feature quick-release snaps so you can grab your tankard for a toast with ease. Many leatherworkers at the fair sell custom holders to match your gear or you can easily make one with thick leather strips and snaps.

Viking Horn Belt Holder

Drinking horn holsters are typically made of leather and cradle the horn securely, often with a loop that slides onto your belt. Some styles suspend the horn vertically, while others allow it to hang at an angle for dramatic flair. Make sure yours is snug to avoid spills while walking or dancing at the fair.

If you’re planning to carry small potion-style bottles, a specialized potion bottle holder is a must.
