Resin is a commonly used material in creating cosplays. From jewelry to gems, it have a variety of applications. While it typically comes clear, you can dye it to be different colors.

Coloring epoxy resin correctly requires using moisture-free colorants to avoid ruining the cure. The best additives include mica powders for a pearlescent shimmer, liquid resin dyes for translucent color, and alcohol inks for vibrant, saturated hues. Avoid water-based acrylic paints, which cause cloudiness and improper hardening.

Coloring Resin:

  • Alcohol-based ink – This dye is very saturated and should be used with caution to not over darken your project. It is also flammable and should be handled properly.
  • Mica powder – These powders can also give a glittery or pearlescent finish to your resin crafts. It’s vital to mix it well to ensure everything settles and cures properly.
  • Acrylic paint – This is a great, inexpensive option. However, it can make your resin item less glossy and negatively impact curing if overused.
  • Resin pigment or dye – There’s a few options out there for a product called resign pigment or dye. They’re specifically designed for coloring your resin projects. One such brand is Eye Candy that you can find online or at craft stores.

How Much Pigment Can You Add to Resin

It’s usually recommended to keep it under 6% of the total volume to prevent curing issues. Always consult the instructions for your specific resin.

What Not to Use to Color Epoxy Resin

While the above can all be used for dying your resin, the following options won’t work.

  • Oil paint
  • Food coloring
