I recently repainted a Freddy Krueger glove. The reason for doing this was there was an existing toy glove that was shaped perfectly and I just didn’t have enough extra time or energy to build a full glove. So after being gifted the prop I went about repainting it. This is a perfectly valid method to create cosplays. There’s nothing wrong with buying cosplays and there’s nothing wrong with just repainting cosplay props or make other modifications to store bought costumes.
Now I don’t mean commission someone and have them do all that hard work and then repaint over it. This really is like existing toys or props that are just mass produced and the paint job just wasn’t right. This can be everything from foam dart guns to cheap Halloween costume props. It also isn’t limited to just repainting cosplay props.
Ways to Modify Cosplay Props
If you bought any cosplay props like I mentioned and want to modify it, you can do so much more than just repainting them. Here’s some other things I have done to modify cosplay props.
- Sewing the Sam mask – I had bought my Sam mask from a costume store at Halloween. However it wasn’t quite perfect since the button eyes were just fake rubber ones. I decided to completely remove those eyes and sew on real buttons for it to upgrade the mask.
- Weathering costumes – Some costumes you order and they look pristine but should look worn like you’re surviving in the wastelands. This is exactly what I had to do for my Fallout 4 vault dweller cosplay. The costume was ordered from another Halloween store and it just looked too much like before I even got in the vault. So with some paint I weathered it out. So not only can you paint props you can do it with costumes too.
