When using EVA foam to create cosplays, we don’t always want it to be smooth or plain. We want raised detailing, engraving or to recreate battle damage and wood grains. This is 100% doable and we’re lucky to have so many tools to choose from. Texturing EVA Foam with a Dremel
A Dremel is hands down one of my favorite tools for shaping, texturing and even detailing EVA foam. The multitude of bits and accessories for this type of tool gives you various options to explore when texturing EVA foam. I give a better deep dive of Dremel bits and their specific applications in my book, but let’s go over some general capabilities for it with texturing foam.

Texturing EVA Foam with Puffy Paint
If you want raised details, puffy paint or even sometimes hot glue can be a simple and affordable way to create them. I personally recommend puffy paint more since hot glue can begin to melt on a hot summer day doing photo shoots or while sweating at conventions.

Texturing EVA Foam with a Soldering Iron or Wood Burning Iron
Both soldering irons and wood burning irons are perfect options for engraving fine lines or other detailing on your foam. All you do is let it heat up and draw into your foam. Be careful not to press too heavily or you can accidentally go through your foam. If you choose a soldering iron, you might want to have one that’s separate for any LED work you want to do as the foam can leave a residue behind on the iron tip.

Texturing EVA Foam with Heat Stamping
Heat stamping is easy and can be done with most household items. Most commonly people will take crumpled tin foil, rollers and pressers with specific patterns and more to press into the foam and heat it so it retains the texture. Such rollers can be 3D printed and there are files for it that can be downloaded online. Or you can use any household item that has a desired texture and won’t melt from the heat gun.

Texturing EVA Foam with Exactos or Hot Knifes
Any sort of cutting tool like box cutters, exactos and hot knifes can help create textures and details. You can use them to cut in fine lines, score and more.

Texturing EVA Foam with Foam Clay
Foam clay is very versatile and is a great thing to keep in a cosplayers tool kit. If you’re trying to learn how to texture EVA foam, this material is a great option. All you have to do is apply, sculpt and carve. It can also then be sanded with your Dremel or sandpaper later too.

Texturing EVA Foam with Stickers
Puffy stickers can help create embossed and elevated textures. The only restrictions is you’re limited to what stickers are available for purchase whereas the puffy paint option lets you draw and design your own texture.
