Looking to dress up as a feline for your next costume? Then you need to know how to make cosplay cat ears. This guide will show you how to make them both with and without sewing.

Supplies

  • Faux fur
  • Worbla or EVA foam
  • Sewing machine (for sewing optional only)
  • Toothbrush and paints
  • Brush and pigmented powders
  • Glue
  • Hair clips or headband and magnets

How to Make Cat Ears for Cosplay

  • Step 1. Cut Worbla or foam – Cut out a piece of Worbla or thin EVA foam that can be used to give structure and stability to your ears.
  • Step 2. Cut faux fur – Cut your faux fur using a cat ear pattern of your choosing. Each ear will be two pieces of fabric.
  • Step 3. Sew fur together – Pin together the two panels of fabric per ear around the outer edge. Leave the bottom open. Then, sew them together.
  • Step 4 – Brush and trim the fur – Once you have sewn together the ear, brush and trim your faux fur so it is a more natural and desirable length.
    • Disclaimer: Have a vacuum handy to avoid a mess.
  • Step 5. Paint or color the fur – You can add shading and other color to the fur by using paints and a toothbrush or pigmented powders and eyeshadows with a small brush.
  • Step 6. Insert structure base – Insert the Worbla or foam base. Be sure to add glue to help secure it inside the ear.
  • Step 7. Close bottom & attach – Seal the bottom of the ear and attach it to either hair clips or a headband. If you use a headband, you can also add magnets to make the ears removable and the headband can be hidden under a wig.

How to Make Cosplay Cat Ears Without Sewing

  • Step 1. Create a pattern – I created the pattern myself and listed it for sale on my Ko-Fi.
  • Step 2. Cut foam – The back portion of the ears you can cut out from 6mm EVA foam. The front portion is cut out of 4mm.
  • Step 3. Assemble foam – Heat up the back pieces with a heat gun and give them a slight bend inward, down the middle. Then, glue the front along the edge of the back piece for a more 3D look to your ears.
  • Step 4. Painting – Paint the interior portion of the ears. The exterior doesn’t need to be painted since we will cover it in fur.
  • Step 5. Attach fur – Cut out pieces of faux fur fabric and glue them onto the foam ear base. Make sure to wrap inward on the front pieces to hide the edge of your fabric. You can use fabric glue, super glue or contact cement.
  • Step 6. Style fur – Using scissors and styling product, style and shape the fur to fit. I chose hair gel for styling, but got2b Glued or clear tacky glue can work as well.
  • Step 7. Attach to headband – Attach magnets at the bottom of the ears. Then attach magnets to the top of a headband. You’ll be able to wear the headband under a wig and the ears attach over the wig.
