EVA foam on it’s own is a great material to make cosplays from. However, there’s another material that works well with foam or on it’s own. If you aren’t familiar with all the cosplay crafting materials out there though, you may be wondering, what this material is. We’re talking about foam clay. This easy to work with option makes sculpting your costumes a breeze. So let’s dive in to what is foam clay and it’s pros and cons.
Foam clay is a moldable material that’s lightweight, easy to shape and attach to foam. It can be used in a variety of ways. This includes filling cracks and seams in foam, sculpting horns or other small components, detailing, texturing foam and so much more. Overall, it’s very versatile due to it being easy to shape and sculpt. Once dry, you can work with it similar to how you would EVA foam with sanding and painting.
Foam clay can be used for cosplaying for small details, textures, small props and paired with EVA foam.
What is Foam Clay Made Of
These are some key ingredients:
- Acrylic acid polymers
- Styrene
- Methyl methacrylate
- Water
- Glycerin
Foam Clay Pros and Cons
Pros
- It’s lightweight even when dry
- Easy to mold with hands, sculpting tools or in molds
- Semi flexible after drying
- Sand it with a rotary tool or sandpaper once it’s dry
- You’re able to paint it similar to how you would EVA foam
- Adheres to EVA foam with water
Cons
- Over time, the dry foam clay can become brittle and crack
- Fine details might be lost after the clay dries
- It isn’t water resistant
Foam Clay Vs. Air-Dry Clay
Air clay isn’t always a better substitute for foam clay. Air-dry clay will dry hard, dense and is better for rigid sculptures. Foam clay is much more lightweight, spongy and can be more flexible when dry, making this perfect for cosplay while air-dry clay remains better for sculptures and other crafting.
When NOT to Use Foam Clay
- Fine detail sculpting since it loses definition and becomes puffy while drying
- Load-bearing structures since it’s not strong enough to hold substantial weight
